Zack Snyder’s DC movies are probably what most of his fans will know him for, but he’s also been involved in many other projects that don’t have comic book origins. His relationship with Netflix has been filled with ups and downs as his signature filmmaking hallmarks haven’t always landed well on the streaming platform.

Now, Snyder has voiced his desire to pursue a new project that’s vastly different from his previous endeavors. He may not be among the upper echelons of the best directors of all time, but he does have a committed following that’s always waiting to see what he does next. His suggestion of moving away from what he’s most known for also displays a respectable effort to broaden his skill set.

With the Rebel Moon director’s cuts for both movies now released, the filmmaker has confirmed that he’s ready to move on to another project for now. Surprisingly, Zack Snyder wants to make a movie, “Without any visual effects.” He hasn’t provided much context outside the intention of scaling down his production techniques, but the thought of a Snyder movie with no CGI is a compelling concept. Snyder has become known for his heavy use of visual effects, so bypassing them completely would make for an interesting experiment.

The decision likely hasn’t come from nowhere, though. With the Rebel Moon movies requiring such astounding levels of VFX and being received so poorly, it’s probably a little discouraging when it comes to continuing to make movies in the same way. Interestingly, Snyder has seemingly confirmed Rebel Moon 3, despite no official word yet from Netflix. So, Snyder’s VFX-less movie could just be a brief diversion before continuing his space opera franchise. On the other hand, he could also be future-proofing himself in case Rebel Moon‘s future isn’t as certain as he wants it to be.

The Rebel Moon franchise is still active, although it’s unclear when and if a third move will be announced. The streaming platform will likely wait to see how the recently released extended cuts of A Child of Fire and The Scargiver will perform before making any final decisions on the series’ future. However, Netflix has quietly canceled Snyder’s Army of the Dead franchise, with all associated projects that were slated to enter production being shelved. As a result, the Army-Verse is over after the release of just two movies.

Snyder has previously suggested that both his Netflix universes are set within the same continuity, or at least he has a plan in mind regarding how the two franchises could collide. So, if Rebel Moon is deemed successful enough to continue, then Snyder could cross Rebel Moon over with the Army of the Dead universe. Such a compelling coming together of such different stories could evoke interest – but this is all just speculation. At present, the Army-verse is over, and Rebel Moon‘s poor reception suggests it could also end soon.
